Supporting Every Child at Cambridge Nursery School

At Cambridge Nursery School we believe every child should have the chance to learn, grow, and shine. We know that children learn in lots of different ways, and some may need a little extra help. That is why we work closely with families to make sure every child can reach their full potential.

Our Approach to SEND

Some children have special educational needs or disabilities (SEND). This means they might need extra help with learning or taking part in activities. At Cambridge, we follow the guidance in the SEND Code of Practice 2014, which puts children and families at the centre of planning support.

Our goal is to make learning fun, inclusive, and tailored to each child. We set individual targets for children who need extra support, and these targets are displayed in class so children and staff can see and celebrate progress together.

How We Work with Families

We know that the best results happen when school and home work as a team. Parents and carers are involved in every step of their child’s learning, from planning support to reviewing progress. By working together, we make sure your child is happy, confident, and supported to achieve their goals.

What Support Looks Like

  • Quality Teaching: All children have access to high-quality learning every day, with teachers and staff adjusting lessons to meet their needs.

  • Small Group Work: Some children benefit from extra support in a small group. This could be for learning language, social skills, or other areas.

  • One-to-One Support: Children with higher levels of need may receive extra individual support, sometimes with guidance from outside professionals like Speech and Language Therapists or Educational Psychologists.

How We Identify Needs

Teachers and keyworkers continually observe children and track their progress. If a child is not making the expected progress, we may involve specialists or put together a support plan to make sure the child gets the help they need. Parents are part of this process from the start.

The Graduated Approach

When extra support is needed, we follow a four-step process:

  1. Assess: Gather information about the child’s strengths and needs.

  2. Plan: Create a support plan with clear goals and strategies.

  3. Do: Put the plan into action with teaching, interventions, and resources.

  4. Review: Meet regularly with parents to check progress and adjust the plan if needed.

Moving On and Transition

We make sure children have a smooth transition when moving to a new class or school. This might include extra visits, transition books, or meetings with new teachers. Parents and professionals work together to make sure the child feels confident and ready for the next step.

Equal Opportunities and Inclusion

All children at Cambridge are included in school life. We make sure every child can take part in activities safely and happily. We adapt lessons, resources, and the environment to remove barriers to learning.

Social and Emotional Support

Children’s feelings and wellbeing are important. Our staff help children learn to understand and manage their emotions, make friends, and build confidence. Sometimes we involve outside specialists for extra support.

Getting in Touch

If you have any questions about your child’s learning or SEND support:

  • Speak to your child’s keyworker or class teacher first.

  • Contact our SENDCO, Sarah Oakley, or our Assistant SENDCO, Gail Conway, for more information.

  • You can also reach the Headteacher, Mrs Joy Snowdon, or our SEND Governor, Mrs Catrin Size.

We are always happy to talk to families and make sure you feel involved, supported, and informed about your child’s learning journey.
