Learning & Curriculum

At Cambridge Nursery School we work closely with families because we know that children thrive when home and school are pulling in the same direction. Every child arrives with their own story, strengths and interests, and we shape our practice around getting to know them well. Language sits at the heart of our work. When children can express their thoughts and feelings, the whole world opens up to them. Our environment is full of conversation, stories and rich experiences that help children grow into confident communicators.

Our curriculum is ambitious and carefully planned to reflect the most up to date EYFS guidance. We use Development Matters as a tool rather than a ceiling and we make sure each child has a key person who understands them deeply. This helps us offer learning that is both accessible and stretching. We want children to feel excited about trying new things and to develop the resilience and curiosity that will carry them into Reception and beyond. Throughout the week, children enjoy a balance of child led exploration, adult guided learning and responsive moments of teaching in small groups, whole class times and individual interactions. All seven areas of learning are woven through our day in meaningful ways.

We see teaching in the early years as a wide and skilful practice. It involves listening closely to what children are interested in, linking learning to their experiences and also gently introducing the knowledge and skills they will rely on in later life. This approach helps children learn to make decisions, solve problems and build positive relationships. Personal, social and emotional development is at the centre of what we do. We support children to understand their feelings, recognise the feelings of others and enjoy being part of a friendly and caring community.

Our outdoor learning environment and elements of forest school are important parts of our provision. Every child has the chance to explore, investigate and learn about the natural world. We welcome visitors from our local community, including police officers, firefighters and dentists, who help children make sense of the wider world and the people who help us.

Because no two groups of children are ever the same, our curriculum is always evolving. We review it often so that it continues to reflect the children we have with us right now and the way their needs develop across the year.
